Big Band Almelo
Big Band Almelo traces its roots from what once was the bigband of the North East Music School of Twente. The co-founder of the band Jan Abbes was the first director, followed in 1981 by Hans Hilgerink. Ten years later the conductor’s baton was passed to Frank van Nus, and this year Joris Bolhaar has become the bands director. The band’s repertoire is richly varied, with jazz and funk and by arrangers and composers such as Bill Holman, Jaco Pastorius, John Clayton, and Peter Herbolzheimer.
Since 2001 Big Band Almelo has been in charge of a yearly concert series with noted guest soloists in the Almelo Theater HOF88. Throughout the years the band has come to accompany quite a list of famous Dutch jazz artists such as, Ack van Rooijen, Greetje Kauffeld, Bart van Lier, Jan Wessels, Adrienne West, Peter Beets, Ferdinand Povel, Frits Landesbergen, Loet van der Lee, Allard Buwalda, Caroline Goudswaard, Rik Elings, Louis Gerrits, Mariske, Jeroen Pek, Sebastian Ohm, Ronald Douglas, Bert Boeren, Johan Plump, Peter Tiehuis, Deborah Carter, Carlo de Wijs, and Martin Verdonk.
